Whether you’re a seasoned small business owner looking to increase sales by adding an online store or a newbie just starting your business, having an ecommerce option for customers is more important than ever. Even though building a web store for customers is a no-brainer, sorting out the options is more like a brain cramp! Because getting an online store up and running can be such a big commitment of time and money, and choosing a platform prematurely can be a difficult hurdle to overcome later, it’s especially important to understand the terminology, differences between platforms, and perhaps most importantly, your operational capacities for adding ecommerce.
FIRST THINGS FIRST – Know the Terms
What’s the difference between an ecommerce platform and an online marketplace? An online marketplace has multiple sellers like eBay, Amazon, Walmart, and Etsy. An ecommerce platform is software that allows one seller to create and operate their own online store.
Do I need one or the other to sell online? The short answer is yes. The only other options to using a marketplace or ecommerce software are to build from scratch (expensive) or use a plug-in to your website (severe limitations).
Which is best for my business? This is where understanding your business capabilities comes in. In brief, online marketplaces generally have more traffic, provide some marketing and customer service support, and offer simplified store creation. They do not assist with inventory management, charge a commission, and inherently create more competition among sellers. On ecommerce platforms, there is inventory support, but the seller is responsible for a more complex store set-up, attracting traffic, generating leads/sales, and customer service support. Fees only apply to hosting/maintain the site or special added features.
CONSIDERATIONS – What does your business need?
Revisit what you sell, how you source it, and who your audience is. If you have been or will be operating a brick and mortar retail store, look again at your products, supply chain, and customer profiles.
- Which of your products lend themselves well to online sales? Is your unique selling proposition the same instore/online? How do you know that?
- Do you have enough profit margin in those products to add the expense of set-up, listing, managing, packing, shipping, and providing customer service required for online selling?
- Who are your potential online customers, where do they shop, and what are their expectations?
- Is your brick and mortar store name right for your online store? If it does not make what you are selling online immediately apparent, you may want to explore an alternative domain name for your ecommerce store.
Take a hard look at your technical capabilities, staffing, equipment, and space.
- Is the technical side of listing and promoting products online a challenge for you?
- How strong is your existing marketing plan? Do you have a robust social media presence and decent website traffic? Do you have ideas for generating online traffic and sales?
- Do you have or can you hire the staff or help you needed to manage the tasks of online selling?
- Do you have the right equipment/systems for great photographs, inventory management, and easy packing/shipping?
- Where will you do these extra tasks?
Make a budget for costs associated with adding ecommerce.
- Figure the costs of changes required to add online shopping to your existing operation.
- Based on your reexamination, decide what your goals and expectations for your e-commerce effort should be.
WHEN TO CHOOSE A MARKETPLACE OPTION
- You don’t have many different items to sell online and can manage inventory on your own.
- You are limited in time, expertise, or the ability to hire help, but want to make some products immediately available online.
- You don’t want to invest in ramping up your online marketing effort right away.
- You’re willing and have enough profit margin to pay a commission.
- You understand and have a plan for maximizing your use of the marketplace platform.

- Are there design options to complement your brand?

Ever since helping his father sell produce at farmer’s markets and his mother cook for her small food business in a small town south of Bandung in the West Java province of Indonesia, opening a restaurant of his own has always appealed to Harrisonburg resident Hotmian Ridwan. With that passion for the food of his native Indonesia, a lot of hard work, and a little help from the programs of the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center(SV SBDC), starting a small business has become reality for Ridwan.
Ridwan began working with the SV SBDC by participating in the “What’s Cooking” program, where he finalized his business plan and learned the necessary steps for starting a business.
“I refined the BoBoKo Indonesian Café’s concept by competing in a food related business concept competition, “What’s Cooking Program,” provided by the city of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia’s partnering with the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center. I received further encouragement to open this café after achieving first place in the competition.”
BoBoKo Indonesian Café has been proudly serving the Harrisonburg community traditional Indonesian cuisine ever since, emphasizing bold spices, rich flavors, and unusual tastes. Many reviewers call the café their local favorite:

The story of Ridwan’s small start-up business success has been a long and inspiring jolurney of determination and grit. Ridwan came to the United States through the H-2B Visa program, a work program that allows qualified U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary nonagricultural jobs they are unable to fill with U.S. residents. Ridwan was hired as a cook in various hotels and restaurants across the country, and eventually earned U.S. permanent resident status through a sponsorship from a local business owner in Harrisonburg. He began working full time as a chef and was later promoted to assistant manager because of his strong work ethic and culinary skills. When he became a U.S. citizen through naturalization in 2017, Ridwan started the process of building his business dream — a restaurant of his own where he could commemorate and celebrate the culinary culture that had shaped him.
The BoBoKo menu features a diverse array of dishes from traditional soups to stir fry and curry. They are also known for catering to customers with dietary restrictions by offering dairy free, gluten free, and vegan options.
Today Ridwan has over a dozen employees and contributes significantly to the Harrisonburg community by hosting fundraisers, making charitable donations, and sponsoring local events such as the annual Blacks Run Clean Up. No doubt the small business help and encouragement Ridwan received through the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center’s programs were a catalyst for bringing this popular eatery to life.

SBDCs launch COVID-19 recovery initiative to promote economic stability, sustainability, and growth.
The GO Virginia State board has approved an $81,813 grant proposal submitted by a regional partnership between Harrisonburg Economic Development, Frederick County Economic Development, Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center (SV SBDC), and Lord Fairfax Small Business Development Center (LF SBDC). This grant creates a Small Business Resiliency Team (SBRT) program with the goal of providing expanded business support services and technical assistance to area businesses in the wake of COVID-19 challenges. The program will deploy Business Resiliency Navigators to guide growth-oriented businesses through a dedicated and well-designed process for achieving incremental and sustainable growth throughout the pandemic recovery period.
Business Resiliency Navigators will work directly with small businesses, assisting with E-commerce, Financial Management, and Marketing needs. The SBRT’s focus is on tourism, retail, healthcare, and professional services businesses, however other companies will be considered. In addition to providing assessments, development of action plans, strategic counseling, and targeted training, the program will provide for services such as accounting, bookkeeping, website development, or e-commerce assistance rendered by industry experts as recommended by the SBRT.
The Virginia Initiative for Growth and Opportunity (GO Virginia) is a business-led initiative that was formed to foster private-sector growth and diversification across nine economic development regions in the Commonwealth. The GO Virginia Board administers state financial incentives designated for regional projects in order to encourage collaboration between private sector companies, workforce, education, and government.
Participating localities include the counties of Augusta, Clarke, Frederick, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and Shenandoah; and the cities of Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, and Winchester. Patrick Barker, CEcD, Executive Director of Frederick County will administer the grant.
“This partnership will be able to provide significantly more assistance to keep businesses healthy and growing in spite of the pandemic. Our SBDCs can collaborate and meet needs of Economic Development Offices throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Our goals include improving the local economy, assisting the participating businesses, and providing contracted work to local vendors for professional services,” said Joyce Krech, Director of the Shenandoah Valley SBDC.
The SBRT program supports GO Virginia goals by expanding regional capacity to coordinate and deliver business support services; helping businesses utilize e-commerce to increase sales; reducing service and production disruptions; encouraging the use of a remote workforce to keep workers employed and productive; and expanding existing training programs that are mission-critical. Expected results from dedicated participants include overall average business growth and retention of their current workforce.
“This grant award will help us keep many of the region’s growth-oriented businesses on a positive financial trajectory towards sustainable success. We will leverage existing resources and utilize GO Virginia funds to provide focused, hands-on consulting, training, and contracted work,” states Christine Kriz, Director of the Lord Fairfax SBDC.

The business will use grant funds for new points of sale, developing an online portal for cooking tips and recipes that use their produce, work with local restaurants to have pop-up meals and film quality chef videos to highlight local produce. The project demonstrates a commitment to the local community and principles in the Future of Shopping Small Guide.
Jon Henry General Store was established in 2018, reviving the historic stone building’s past use. The structure housed a general store in the early 1800’s for several decades. Owner Jon Henry and his family have lived in the Shenandoah Valley for the past five generations, mainly as farmers. The store builds upon the family’s past-time of produce peddling, and its “brick and mortar” location extends beyond seasonal produce. The business offers brooms, vintage license plates, jams and jellies, local honey, canned goods, children’s wooden toys, memorabilia, candies and more for residents and visitors. The general store also actively partners with local churches, schools and sports teams as sponsors, donors and participants.

Lora Nalberczinski initially came to the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center just before opening her business back in 2007. While she had her medical license and the passion to help people, she needed a little help with the complex start-up process.
“I started this business without ever taking a business or accounting course,” Nalberczinski explained. “I didn’t know what a balance sheet was, or how to even begin working with a budget.”
Seven years later, The Speech and Language Center is wildly successful and still expanding to meet their growing client needs.
The Speech and Language Center began solely with speech therapy but quickly expanded to offering occupational, physical and behavioral therapies as well as counseling to clients across the Shenandoah Valley. The Center provides integrated, collaborative services through partnerships in the community, local schools systems, and physician’s offices. While their specialty is pediatrics, they also offer services for all ages and entire families.
After her initial startup in 2007, Nalberczinski has faced a number of happy obstacles, particularly with the Center’s rapid growth and need for hiring additional staff. The SBDC aided Nalberczinski by offering insight on when to hire as well as helping the Center access additional funds they may not have found otherwise.
“Without these loans and grants we would not have been able to sustain at times, and we definitely would not have been able to continue growth,” Nalberczinski exclaimed.
In 2012, The Speech and Language Center officially relocated to its current larger space on Port Republic Road, allowing them to hire much needed additional staff. Now the Center has 14 staff members, four of which were added in just the past year.
“Thanks to the SV SBDC connecting us with on-the-job training for hiring grants, we have completely filled our current space,” Nalberczinski remarked. “The SBDC will now be guiding us with looking for our next locations!”
The Speech and Language Center’s main goal has always been to meet the needs of the community while fostering a positive, happy environment for their staff and clientele. With the SBDC’s help, the Center looks to continue pushing this goal with a future location change and expansion, as well as revamping their brand to better demonstrate all of the services the Center provides.

After years of styling hair, taking classes, and attending exhibitions all around the world, Jay and Ann Brown were looking to start their own salon in Harrisonburg, VA. While they were more than experienced with hair design, they needed help getting the business rolling and keeping the startup costs to a minimum. With the help of the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center, Brown & Co. Hair Design officially opened its doors in June of 2010.
Brown & Co. Hair Design is a full service hair salon that prides itself on their creative haircut designs, quality of staff, and ability to give customers a memorable and positive experience. Brown & Co. offers a wide variety of services, including complete restyling, dying, root touch ups, highlights, and more. The salon is also conveniently located in a beautifully renovated Victorian house on the southern edge of downtown Harrisonburg.
The Browns initially came to the SV SBDC for assistance with preparing their business plan, as well as determining whether they needed additional financing to start the business.
“The SV SBDC provided resources such as research on the location and professional advice,” they said. “We were able to save money in our startup costs because of [Director] Joyce Krech and the SBDC staff.”

Sue George was a freelance professional editor and wordsmith who had been working with various national and international clients since 1999. In 2014, she launched a new effort to grow her business by serving local Harrisonburg clients. While she had years of experience in writing and project management, she needed help expanding her business volume. After reaching out to the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center, she has increased her business and laid the groundwork for future expansion.
Sue George Communications helps businesses, non-profits and individuals meet their editorial and marketing needs with high quality content and other communication services. If your company needs press releases, newsletters, blogs, print materials, proposals, online productions, or content distribution George is a must.
“I come from an editorial, project management and engineering background, which is appropriate for the kind of work I do,” George explained. “I had no formal training in business, though, so I was hoping to benefit from the SBDC’s expertise.”
Despite the challenge of being a one-woman operation handling a large number of clients, George has made a number of accomplishments with help from the SBDC and her business counselor, SV SBDC Director Joyce Krech.
“First, the SBDC helped me revamp my website by offering invaluable guidance and feedback as I went through the re-design and development process,” George said. Next the SBDC helped George establish a network of local business contacts and potential clients. Lastly, George especially noted the moral support and encourage given to her by the SBDC in growing her business.
George has already made large strides with her business in one year, citing a 68% revenue increase from last year. As she continues to grow her business volume, her goal is to increase sustainability over time and create more long term relationships with clients locally and internationally.
“I’m grateful to my counselor, [SBDC Director] Joyce Krech, for the knowledge and ongoing support,” George stated. “I would strongly recommend the experience of working with the SBDC to other small business owners!”
The first time she experienced an ice cream truck at age 18, Elizabeth Irvin dreamed of bringing one of her own to her hometown in Luray, VA. As a full time teacher and single mother, starting her business required careful planning and balancing responsibilities. With the guidance of the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center (SV SBDC) and a supportive community, Irvin realized her dream with the opening of The Ice Cream Truck LLC in March, 2014.
The Ice Cream Truck is the only mobile vending truck in Page County, where Elizabeth serves frozen novelty treats to the community and at special events and parties. Her goal is to bring both delicious ice cream and an unforgettable experience to residents.
“This is something the children in our community had never experienced,” Irvin explained. “I felt very passionate about bringing this type of business to Luray.”
When Irvin began the process of opening the Ice Cream Truck, she wanted to keep the startup cost minimal and her budget balanced and organized. She therefore, met with SV SBDC Director Joyce Krech for advice and consultation.
“I knew the SBDC could help guide me in the right direction, let me know if I was doing something wrong in the startup phase and see what else I needed to do.”
Irvin is also fortunate to have a supportive community that realizes her family must come first. “If I have a sick child and can’t make my route that day, or if I need to go support my child at a soccer game, everyone has been amazing in understanding all the obstacles.”

Since their opening, The Ice Cream Truck has been a hit around Luray neighborhoods and parks, providing a fun and delicious way for residents to beat the summer heat. Irvin and her truck have been featured in Page News and Courier as well as the Daily News Record, and with the suggestion of the SV SBDC, she joined the local Chamber of Commerce. Irvin plans to expand her inventory in the near future to include locally made ice creams in a number of unique flavors. With good preparation, knowledge of her target market, and strong community ties, Irvin and her Ice Cream Truck are an assured success.
