During this session, the USPTO will cover everything a startup needs to know in order to prepare to protect their intellectual property. This will include several examples from the life sciences and healthcare, but the information will be relevant to all early-stage companies. Following the initial presentation, there will be breakout sessions to cover specific topic areas in more detail. These will be led by an ICAP Mentor and USPTO expert.
There will be several ways to attend the event, including in-person at the USPTO in Alexandria, virtually, and at several in-person watch party locations around the Commonwealth.

There are many avenues by which breweries can seek out efficiencies, but only environmental improvements have the added benefit of making Virginia a bit greener.

In this webinar, Virginia SBDC Craft Beverage Assistance program manager Chris Van Orden will ask Meghann Quinn, Manager of the Office of Pollution Prevention at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, about the strategies and resources available to breweries looking to sharpen operations in an eco-friendly way.

About the speaker: Meghann Quinn has managed the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Office of Pollution Prevention for the past 8 years. The Office of Pollution Prevention promotes green practices that go beyond regulatory requirements through programs including the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program, Virginia Green, and the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards. Prior to working with DEQ, she gained experience working with industry and municipalities on compliance and environment management systems. Ms. Quinn has a Masters degree in Environmental Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Mary Washington. She grew up on Long Island. In her free time you can find Meghann running or chasing her 2 young boys around.

After her departure from the USPTO, she worked as a solo trademark practitioner; in-house trademark attorney consultant for Lockheed Martin and Leidos Corporations; and trademark and fashion law professor at her alma mater Howard University School of Law (HUSL). In 2015, Mariessa was recruited to manage the USPTO Trademark Law Clinic at HUSL and was instrumental in helping to develop a Patent Clinic at HUSL in 2019. Mariessa returned to the USPTO in 2020 and currently works as a trademark attorney advisor in the office of Trademarks Customer Outreach where she delivers to experienced practitioners educational content on advanced trademark topics. She earned her J.D from Howard University School of Law; her B.A., magna cum laude, from Pace University in New York City; and is admitted to the Maryland and District of Columbia bar associations.

Earned Media as a Craft Beverage Marketing Strategy @ Virtual Webinar

Most craft beverage companies, no matter their size or model, recognize the importance of marketing, but too many ignore a high impact strategy: earned media.  In this webinar, Virginia SBDC Craft Beverage Assistance program manager Chris Van Orden will ask Lisa Archer, Editor and Publisher of Edible Blue Ridge, about her experience working with the craft beverage sector, the media’s process for sourcing stories on local producers, and what makes a good subject.

SPEAKER: Lisa Archer is the editor and publisher of Edible Blue Ridge, a quarterly magazine dedicated to celebrating Central & Southwestern Virginia’s unique regional food scene, with a focus on our many farms, orchards, wineries, farmers markets, specialty shops, eateries, food artisans and home cooks. Edible Blue Ridge distributes 10,000 copies of each issue through more than 200 select grocers, restaurants and retailers across their territory.

Lisa holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Hollins University, and has worked in the food and beverage industry for over 18 years. In addition to working for a three-Michelin-star restaurant, and as a master sommelier’s assistant, Lisa has also managed a specialty grocery store, started her own ice cream sandwich business and even spent time as an affineur and sales rep for a cheese cave in Brooklyn. She co-hosts Outside the Box, a monthly informational meetup group for small business owners in the greater Roanoke area. When she’s not at work, you can find her hiking one of the local trails or pulling weeds in her ever-expanding garden.
